Writing Events, Courses and Workshops for Aspiring Authors

QUAD will have a host of writing courses, workshops and events for readers, writers, aspiring authors and fans of Literature, with plenty to appeal across a wide variety of genres.

Our perennially popular writing course, Poetry From Start To Finish will be delivered by Derby poet and performer Sophie Sparham. Over the six week course participants will be exploring the range of literary devices and techniques available to poets, forms and styles of poetry, how to edit your work and how to break into the worlds of publishing and performance. This well-rounded and concise course is ideal for those just looking to explore poetry for this first time, as well as more seasoned writers in the field. Poetry From Start To Finish runs on Mondays from 12th  June, tickets are £60/£50 concessions and can be booked here.

As part of the highly successful Derby Book Festival, we will also be hosting a Day of Writing with five workshops and an author panel. These 90-minute workshops will explore different genres and areas of fiction offering a choice of sessions on new fields of writing.

The workshops include:  Successful Self-Publishing with bestselling romantic comedy author Tracy Bloom, Writing Historical Fiction with Clare Harvey, Writing Children’s Fiction with Karen Ball, Writing Flash Fiction with Shaun Kennedy and Making a Living as a Writer with Alex Davis. The day also features a panel discussion ‘Writers and The First Book’, featuring debut novelist Sarah Day, soon-to-be debut novelist Roz Watkins and agented novelist Jo Bunt talking about their routes to publication and the key steps they took to get there. Day of Writing takes place in QUAD on Saturday 17th June, tickets are available for one off workshops priced £10 and the closing panel event priced £5.

In July, QUAD hosts the annual celebration of science-fiction, fantasy and horror writing Edge-Lit. Edge-Lit 6 brings together some of the UK's leading authors for a day of workshops, panels, readings and book launches for writers, readers and fans of genre fiction. Edge-Lit Guests include Samantha Shannon, bestselling author of The Bone Season; Multi-award winning science-fiction author Stephen Baxter; Acclaimed fantasy and literary author Joanne Harris; Andrew Michael Hurley, Costa Book Award winning author of The Loney; Ken Macleod, leading SF author of The Corporation Wars; Peter Newman, author of The Malice and The Vagrant and Jeff Noon, science-fiction author of the Vurt series

Two further writing events take place in in QUAD in July, Writing from Life Workshop with Eve Makis is a chance to have a go at ‘life’ writing through a series of structured exercises. Using life experiences as the basis for fiction or memoir writing, the session includes advice and constructive feedback suitable for beginners and experienced writers. Taught by a novelist who always comes equipped with cake! Writing from Life Workshop with Eve Makis takes place on Thursday 13th July from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, tickets are: £8.00.

LGBT-QWERTY in association with Derbyshire LGBT+ presents Looking Back, Looking Forward, a spoken word event commemorating 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK. Featuring performances of new works by Sophie Sparham, Ash Watson, Dan Webber, Rachel Green and Ciaran Hodgers.  The event looks at LGBT+ life in 2017. Looking Back, Looking Forward takes place in QUAD on Friday 28th July from 7:00pm to 8:00pm .
