Part of All Hallows Haunts
In 1980, there may only have been 3 TV channels, but on 13 Saturday nights that year, one of them showed Hammer House of Horror, a series of chilling tales that brought witchcraft, Satanism, werewolves and all manner of attendant weirdness into the nation’s homes. Hammer’s cinematic star had waned by this point, but the company had not lost its knack for making everyday English life a site of terror. With great performances from a host of familiar faces, and some rich comic moments into the bargain, Hammer House of Horror deserves a reappraisal. How well has it stood the test of time?
