Andrew Fergus Wilson - City Hobgoblins: Urban Folk & Horror
Sun 28 Feb 2027
Part of UK Ghost Story Festival 2027
When rural workers migrated to the industrial cities in the Nineteenth Century they brought their folk tales with them. In the fabric of bricks and mortar, concrete and steel these old horrors take new form. Given the centrality of landscape and isolated communities to Adam Scovell's 'folk horror chain' this talk will explore cities as hosts of new forms of folk horror. Drawing on ideas associated with psychogeography, liminality, class, and psychoanalysis Dr Andrew Fergus Wilson (University of Derby) will reveal the terrors lurking in tower blocks, subterranean tunnels, subways, and railway sidings.
