From the wandering spirit of the unbaptised infant or murdered/neglected child in folklore, to the domesticated ghost child of nineteenth-century fiction, to the vengeful and violent revenant of contemporary Gothic Horror literature and cinema, this talk will trace the development of the ghost child figure in the Western imagination. What makes this figure so particular, so pitiful and yet terrifying? What meanings are inscribed upon it at different junctures in time? Settle in for some (not so) minor hauntings!
