Animate is pleased to partner with QUAD to host the launch event for the Roam project. This is an opportunity to see the new films and to hear from artists Edd Carr and Sarah Silverwood about their inspirations and creative processes. The artists will be joined in a Q&A with writer, campaigner, Jon Moses, a member of the Right to Roam movement.
Each artist has made a short film inspired by the Right to Roam campaign movement and their vision of “a future countryside in which people not only enjoy the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of nature but serve as its guardians too”.
The films were developed through a period of research, supported by discussions with Jon Moses and the team at Animate Projects. They reflect on themes of belonging, ancestry, enclosure, privatisation, colonial legacy, access islands, mysticism and witchcraft. These rich, mixed media animations have put environmental considerations and sustainability at the forefront of their techniques, and include foraged wood, cyanotype made with boiled oak bark, oak gall ink painting on paper, film developed in oak tannin, and archival imagery.
