Free film screening in Derby explores climate action
Residents in Derby are invited to a free community event on Friday 9th October at QUAD, featuring a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing film, followed by an open discussion on practical, local climate action.
The event brings together local organisations and initiatives to showcase how people across Derby can get involved in tackling climate change while saving money, improving their homes, and strengthening their communities.
Alongside the film screening, attendees will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about Green Rewards, a scheme encouraging sustainable everyday choices
- Find out how to get involved in community energy projects
- Connect with the Derby Climate Coalition and local climate groups
- Take part in the interactive How Bad Are Bananas? game, exploring the carbon impact of everyday items in a fun and accessible way
The People’s Emergency Briefing is a national initiative aimed at making clear, trusted information about climate change more widely accessible, while also creating a platform for people to come together and discuss what action is needed at every level.
As well as focusing on what individuals and communities can do, the event will also highlight the importance of wider, national action. The film aims to encourage attendees to consider how they can make their voices heard by engaging with local MPs and calling for greater leadership and action from Government.
This includes support for the call for a national, televised emergency briefing to ensure the public has access to clear, consistent information about the climate crisis and the steps needed to respond.
This local event is designed to move beyond the headlines, offering practical steps that individuals and communities can take, while also recognising the need for change at the scale and pace required.
Councillor Carmel Swan, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability said:
“Events like this are about making climate action feel relevant and achievable. There are already lots of positive things happening locally, but it’s also important that people feel empowered to ask for the wider changes needed at a national level.”
The event is free to attend and open to all. No prior knowledge of climate change is needed.
