Housewife Atsuko (AMAMI Yuki) is saving up for retirement, trying to live frugally as she worries about the future. The other members of her family live comparatively carefree lives: husband Akira (MATSUSHIGE Yutaka) knows nothing of their financial circumstances, while daughter Mayumi (SHINKAWA Yua) and son Hayato (SETO Toshiki) are at the beginning of their adult lives.

Suddenly, a series of unfortunate happenings spell financial disaster: a family argument saddles Atsuko with the cost of her father-in-law’s funeral, she is fired from her part-time job, bankruptcy ends Akira’s company, Mayumi plans an extravagant wedding, and Atsuko’s mother-in-law (KUSABUE Mitsuko) – whose big-spending reputation precedes her – moves in too!
