Enter The Clones Of Bruce
When Bruce Lee died in 1974 at the peak of his superstardom, he had completed only four feature films. But within hours of his funeral, Hong Kong movie studios began to produce hundreds of unauthorised biopics, sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and rip-offs starring a competing series of Lee lookalikes. Over the next decade, fueled by both deception and demand, ‘Bruceploitation’ would become a staple of global cinema. This new documentary examines this uniquely ‘70s phenomenon via interviews with Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Bruce Liang and Dragon Lee; martial arts movie legends that include Angela Mao, David Chiang, Phillip Ko, Casanova Wong, Yasuaki Kurata and Sammo Hung; and the producers, directors, distributors and experts – along with copious clips from the films themselves – that for the first time reveal the history, controversy and legacy behind one of the most bizarre and successful genres in movie history.
Screening alongside a classic Bruceploitation title:
The Clones Of Bruce Lee
1980 Hong Kong Dir: Joseph Kong / Nam Gi-Nam 90 mins
Immediately after the death of Bruce Lee in Hong Kong, Colonel Colin of the Special Branch of Investigations asks Professor Lucas, a brilliant scientist, to take samples of the late master’s brain tissue. Using these samples, Lucas creates three perfect clones of Lee: Bruce Lee 1 (Dragon Lee), Bruce Lee 2 (Bruce Le), and Bruce Lee 3 (Bruce Lai). They are trained in martial arts by Bolo Yeung and Chiang Tao. The mission of the clones is to fight crime in Southeast Asia.
This screening will include an introduction from Satori Screen’s Peter Munford.
