The Aura of Boxing is a photographic documentary project and three-venue exhibition by British artist Max Kandhola. The Contact Sheets element of the 3 exhibitions will be shown at the Chocolate Factory as part of the FORMAT off-year programme.
The New Art Exchange in Nottingham exhibited The Black and White Series in January 2014, and Rich Mix in London will exhibit The Colour Series in March 2014. A 96-page publication The Aura of Boxing will accompany the 3 exhibitions, published by Dewi Lewis.
The Aura of Boxing is a photographic study, begun in 1996, into the aesthetic and moral conflicts of the boxer within the spatial interior of the pugilistic landscape. Kandhola photographed boxers at different weight divisions: amateur and professional; unknown boxers; contenders; champions, and in the pursuit of the odyssey of the boxing journeyman. The Aura of Boxingintertwines between the boxer and their environment. At the peripheral Kandhola followed three established boxers as a point of reference, which provides a legacy and provenance of boxing histories.
The Aura of Boxing engages in the sensory experiential and spatial environment of boxing. The contact sheet is the authentic eye of the photographer it provides an intimate and highly personal and private encounter. It is the ultimate trace to the photographers working methodologies; they are the pages to my sketchbook.
The Aura of Boxing is supported by Arts Council England and Nottingham Trent University
