Knowing Me, Knowing You: The True Self in Japanese Cinema
Siblings Toshiki (Suzuki Ryohei) and Fumiko (Arimura Kasumi) live together in downtown Osaka. Orphaned young, they have relied solely on each other to navigate life. Driven by a promise to their late parents, Toshiki sacrificed his life and education to support Fumiko, who now works at a university and leads a happy and stable life.
One day, Fumiko announces to Toshiki that she wants to marry her colleague Nakazawa Taro (Suzuka Oji). While Toshiki is happy for them, her odd behaviour starts to trouble him. In fact, it seems connected to a childhood incident when Fumiko insisted that she was not really Fumiko but a woman called Shigeta Kiyomi — who, as it turns out, died in an accident. Continuing to correspond with the Shigeta family behind Toshiki’s back, Fumiko now wants to invite them to the wedding…Will his beloved and daring sister still be the person Toshiki knows?
JFTFP regular and previous guest, Maeda Tetsu (What Happened to Our Nest Egg!?, JFTFP25; Do Unto Others, JFTFP24) once again demonstrates his versatile filmmaking style. Adapted from an award-winning short novel, Maeda transforms the story into a beautifully crafted, heart-warming film about a person who shares someone else’s memories.
