Pink String and Sealing Wax

PG

Googie Withers plays Pearl Bond, the frustrated wife of an 1880s Brighton tavern keeper. Looking for a way to escape her marriage, Pearl persuades a chemist’s son to act as accomplice in a murder plot.  Exploring the clash between two very different worlds in Victorian Brighton: the privileged, pious household of respected chemist Edward Sutton (Mervyn Johns), who rules his family with self-righteous cruelty, and the seedy underworld occupied by pub landlord’s wife Pearl, her brutal alcoholic husband, Joe (Garry Marsh), and her lover, minor villain Dan (John Carol). Murder, blackmail and a wonderfully manipulative performance from Googie Withers.

Screening with an introduction from film historian Darrell Buxton who will also be hosting a post-screening discussion.
