We know so little of the world beneath our feet. To most it is a place only of fear and darkness, though to a brave few it is one of knowledge and wonder to be found nowhere else. Based on the bestselling book by Robert Macfarlane, Underland is a cinematic documentary that voyages into worlds rarely glimpsed by human eyes. Beginning in the shallow soils beneath an old ash tree, the film follows several ‘astronauts of the underworld’ as they travel into ancient sacred caves, flooded storm drains, melting glaciers, underwater burial chambers and a deep underground laboratory built to solve the mysteries of the Universe. Narrated by Oscar-nominated Sandra Hüller, and with a uniquely poetic approach, Underland is a deep dive into the Earth that ultimately presents a groundbreaking vision for rethinking our lives on this fragile surface.

Beginning this Summer we will be embarking on a tour across the Peak District to record your tales on our mysterious Listening Stone, created by artist T And The Creatures. Your stories will be archived on an interactive website for a project that will document the folklore, customs and curiosities of the UK’s most wondrous national park.

Do you know a folk tale from the Peaks? Do you have a strange story passed down through your family? Have you seen a UFO? Does a big cat roam the woods near yourhouse? Do you take part in a well dressing every year? Is there a haunted house in your village? Have you scored the winning goal at Ashbourne Shrovetide? Are there customs and rituals you think should be recorded and documented?

The evening will feature a screening of acclaimed new documentary ‘Our Land’ along with performances and partying, and a chance to come face to face with the Peak District’s newest megalithic stone discovery… The Listening Stone.
