Derby Lantern Sculpture Trail – ‘World of Flowers’ – QUAD Foyer

QUAD is pleased to be one of the locations for this year’s Lantern Sculpture Trail as part of Derby Season of Light 2024 festival.

Commissioned by Surtal Arts, eight emerging artists from Derby & Derbyshire will create a series of giant lantern sculptures trailing through the city. Inspired by the theme of climate action, the “World of Flowers” trail features 11 unique works, lit with eco-friendly LED lights and made of recycled materials.  They are waiting to be discovered in various locations in the city centre and Normanton – connecting some of Derby’s most unique communities and places. Families can go hunting for these special sculptures while discovering new places, people and stories and take pride in the city we call ‘home’.

Locations are:

(1) Derby College
(2) Electric Daisy
(3) Thrivemind Village
(4) QUAD
(5) Artcore Gallery
(6) St Peter’s Church
(7) Derby Train Station
(8) The Orangery – Arboretum Park
(9) Derby Jamia Mosque
(10) Geeta Bhawan Hindu Temple
(11) Guru Arjan Dev Gurdwara

About the sculpture at QUAD

‘Gothic Rose’ by artist Kellie Everton

This Willow lantern sculpture celebrates Derby’s Gothic heritage. Situated at QUAD, a venue known for commitment to arts, cultural engagement and cinema, providing an ideal backdrop for this evocative piece.

The rose symbolises the Gothic community’s intertwining of beauty and decay, illuminating the rich history of Derby’s association with Dracula, including the world premiere of Hamilton Deane’s adaptation at Derby’s Grand Theatre in 1924. The eco-friendly materials and gothic “D” frame reflect Derby’s blend of tradition and innovation, making it a poignant and inspiring addition to the Season of Light 2024.
