Christmas at QUAD 2022 – family films, special screenings and hot chocolates
There will be Christmas themed films and events at QUAD Derby during December.
QUAD’s Christmas films include traditional seasonal favourites, including Frank Capra’s heart-warming yuletide classic It’s A Wonderful Life, Love Actually, Home Alone, Elf and The Muppet Christmas Carol. There will also be screenings at Derby Cathedral.
A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story is a Nottingham Playhouse production, filmed live for cinemas during the 2021 stage run at London’s sumptuous Alexandra Palace Theatre. Starring Mark Gatiss as Jacob Marley in his retelling of Dickens’ classic winter ghost story, alongside Nicholas Farrell as Scrooge. This powerful tale of life, love, loss and redemption is as relevant today as when it was first published 179 years ago.
A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story (PG) screens at QUAD on Tuesday 6th December at 8pm. Tickets are £16, £14 Concessions, or £10 for anyone aged under 25.
The Bishop’s Wife stars Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven in a delightful romantic comedy. Heavenly bells are ringing, jubilant choirs are singing, and Christmas joy is blanketing the world like freshly fallen snow. But the Yuletide spirit has yet to warm Bishop Henry Brougham’s Victorian home. Struggling to raise funds for a new cathedral, the preoccupied young clergyman has neglected his loving wife Julia. But the powerful and handsome angel sent from above has a mind of his own and teaching mortal Henry an immortal lesson in romance. The Bishop’s Wife (U) screens at QUAD from Friday 9th to Thursday 15th December.
It’s A Wonderful Life stars James Stewart as banker George Bailey, who has spent his entire life in the small town of Bedford Falls, sacrificing his personal ambitions for his family and community. He is shown the impact of his life by Clarence, an angel sent to Earth to earn his wings. It’s A Wonderful Life (U) screens at QUAD from Sunday 18th to Saturday 24th December.
Love Actually explores the ups and downs of relationships in the weeks building up to Christmas. Boyfriends & girlfriends, husbands & wives, fathers & sons and rock stars & managers all combine in very different stories. Featuring an all-star cast including Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant, Bill Nighy, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laura Linney. Love Actually (15) screens at QUAD on Friday 23rd December at 8pm.
Die Hard is set on Christmas Eve, when tough New York detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) arrives in Los Angeles with the aim of reconciling with his estranged wife, Holly at the Christmas party of her employer, the Nakatomi Corporation. When the party is disrupted by a group of heavily armed criminals led by the charismatic Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), McClane evades capture and begins a one-man war against the hostage takers who are attempting to rob the corporation whilst occupying the LAPD and the FBI by posing as terrorists. Die Hard (15) screens at QUAD on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th December.

For Families, QUAD’s Cine Kids screenings take place every weekend and school holidays with three perennial festive favourites. All tickets are £4.00 for Cine Kids Club members.
Home Alone stars Macaulay Culkin stars as ten-year-old Kevin McCallister who is inadvertently left home alone by his family when they go on vacation. on discovering he’s alone in an empty house, Kevin not only faces life on his own but also with two incompetent would-be burglars, Marv and Harry. Home Alone (PG) screens in QUAD from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th December.
The Muppet Christmas Carol brings a muppet take on the classic Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the gang. Michael Caine plays the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the cruel and heartless man who is visited by the three Ghosts Of Christmas Past, Present and Future and shown the error of his ways. A heart-warming Christmas classic perfect for all the family. The Muppet Christmas Carol (U) screens in QUAD from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 24th December.
Elf stars Will Ferrell as Buddy, a human being brought up by Santa and his elves at the North Pole, who has spent the last 30 years happily working in Santa’s toy workshop. When his ungainly size starts to become a liability in the elf-sized working environment, Santa suggests that Buddy head to New York City to find his biological father. Elf (PG) screens in QUAD from Thursday 22nd to Saturday 24th December.
Family Friendly Screenings taking place at Derby Cathedral are Arthur Christmas and The Muppet Christmas Carol.
Arthur Christmas follows Santa (Jim Broadbent) his family and helpers, working hard every year to get presents out to everyone in the world on Christmas Eve. Santa’s family includes his cranky 136-year-old father Grandsanta, his devoted wife Mrs and his poles-apart sons, Steve (Hugh Laurie) and Arthur. Can they all work together to save Christmas? Arthur Christmas (U) screens at Derby Cathedral on 17th December at 4:30pm, doors are open from 4pm.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (U) screens at Derby Cathedral on 17th December at 7:00pm, doors are open from 6:30pm.

In QUAD Café a selection of hot seasonal drinks includes speciality Hot Chocolates Gingerbread or Honeycomb or alcoholic Black Forest or boozy Baileys latte as well as mince pies and festive cakes.

Closing early from 6pm on Saturday 24th, 26th and 31st of December.
