Cinema In The Valley: Outdoor Cinema in Derbyshire’s Derwent Valley, Summer 2021

QUAD in Derby has announced a new programme of outdoor film screenings called ’Cinema In The Valley’, which will take place in Derbyshire’s Derwent Valley in August and September.

Organised as part of QUAD’s Summer Nights outdoor film screenings, ’Cinema In The Valley’ is backed by trentbarton’s mango ticketing app and also the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Partnership (DVMWHS), the screenings have also benefited from funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund & Arts Council England through the DVMWHS Partnership’s Great Place Scheme.

The outdoor film screenings will take place at three venues in Derbyshire’s Derwent Valley: Cromford Meadows Cricket Club, Derby Rugby Club and Belper Town Football Club. Bohemian Rhapsody, Grease, Dirty Dancing, The Greatest Showman Labyrinth, Mamma Mia and The Blues Brothers are the films which will be shown. The screenings are being sponsored by the mango app, with trentbarton putting on additional buses to enable film fans to easily get to the valley locations and home again.

Jeff Counsell, Managing Director of trentbarton, said: “mango is all about giving our customers value for money, as well as an easy and flexible way to travel, including for leisure. After the year we’ve all had, everyone is looking forward to getting out to enjoy the summer and what better way for film fans than to jump on a bus to watch a magical movie outdoors in our wonderful Derwent Valley.”

Professor Ian Whitehead, Chair of the DVMWHS Great Place Scheme Board, said: “Cinema in the Valley was a project we wanted to support through our Great Place Scheme Funding to bring QUAD’s successful format to locations in the World Heritage Site. We’re excited to welcome film-goers to the Derwent Valley!”

Dr Alex Rock, at Derby QUAD, said: We’re delighted to be bringing outdoor cinema to the historic surroundings of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. These screenings will give people the opportunity to see the unique heritage of our county in a new light and have lots of fun too. QUAD has over ten years’ experience of running outdoor cinema events nationwide, but this summer I’m looking forward to hopping on the sixes and enjoying these screenings in our own beautiful county.”

About The Great Place Scheme The Great Place Scheme is a pilot programme funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England, supported by Historic England to ensure that investment in arts and culture also has the biggest possible impact on local economies, jobs, education, community cohesion and health and wellbeing. 16 schemes have been chosen across England. The Scheme for the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site’s is designed to inspire and enable people to have a sense of pride in and belonging to this special place.

About Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site In December 2001, the Derwent Valley Mills in Derbyshire were inscribed on the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) World Heritage List.  This is the only World Heritage Site in the East Midlands.

This international designation confirms the outstanding importance of the area as the birthplace of the factory system where in the 18th century waterpower was successfully harnessed for textile production.

Stretching 15 miles (24km) down the river valley from Matlock Bath to Derby, the World Heritage Site contains a fascinating series of historic mill complexes, including some of the World’s first ‘modern’ factories.
