Family friendly activities and films for summer holidays at QUAD
QUAD has a range of family friendly activities over the summer holidays, including craft activities, digital sessions, workshops and film screenings. These include workshop sessions for young people, or those for the whole family to enjoy together.
In July QUAD welcomes the return of Robot Day with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). The event, now in its fourth year, explores all things robotic to entertain, inspire and take part in for everyone from toddlers to academics. The programme of events will include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) activities, including robot build competitions, coding sessions, family craft activities, interactive activities, displays, demonstrations and installations in the venue and outside on Derby Market Place. A programme of inspirational talks and presentations from leaders in the field of robotics offer a chance to hear from the experts about how robots can improve people’s lives. Robot Day will take place at QUAD in Derby on Saturday 6th July from 10:00am until 4:00pm. Robot Day is free, there will be a mixture of drop-in and scheduled bookable events. Over the Summer Holidays Summer Make and Take are free craft sessions for the whole family offer a chance to be creative and make something to take home afterwards. This Summer’s sessions will be exploring alternative realities, parallel worlds and Sci-Fi inspired workshops with QUAD artist Helen Jackson. Suitable for families with children aged three and above, Summer Make and Take takes place every Thursday in August (2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th August). There will be two free, drop-in sessions every Thursday from 10:30am to 1:00pm or 1:30pm to 4:00pm.
KidsQUAD: ‘Alien artworks! is a chance to join artist Meghan Broadmeadow, whose artwork is in QUAD’s Gallery during the summer, to create some sci-fi and alien artwork. KidsQUAD are activities for children aged seven to eleven without their parents. KidsQUAD: Alien artworks! takes place on Tuesday 20th August, from 10:30am to 3:00pm, the cost is £25.00 for the session and places need to be booked in advance through QUAD Box office. Participants should also bring a packed lunch.
Also, for those aged seven to eleven years, Arts Award Summer School with 1623 Theatre offers an exciting week of creativity and artistic exploration in QUAD. Young people will create a digital ship, design a magical island and take on the roles of its mysterious inhabitants, inspired by Shakespeare and his play The Tempest. Activities take place over five days and lead to a sharing event for family and friends. All participants who complete the full week of activities will be referred to receive an Arts Award Explore certificate from Trinity College London, in association with Arts Council England. Arts Award Summer School with 1623 Theatre takes place in QUAD from Tuesday 27th – 31st August from 9:30am to 5:30pm, the sharing event takes place on Friday 30th August at 5:00pm.The cost is £100 per person for the full week and includes an Arts Award certificate. Places are limited and available to book via QUAD Box office, participants should also bring a packed lunch.
MinecraftLAB sessions are open events as part of QUADs Minecraft programme and focus on specific objectives. The MinecraftLAB community build sessions are a chance to work collaboratively to explore, create and build beyond the standard Minecraft world. Suitable for ages eight to sixteen years, MinecraftLAB takes place in QUAD on three Wednesdays in August, (7th 14th and 21st August) with two sessions taking place from 10:00am to 12:30pm or afternoons from 1:30pm to 4:00pm. Participants can book on any number of sessions, the cost per person per session is: £8 (or £14 for two sessions). Advance booking is recommended.
QUAD will also be holding daily ‘Cine Kids’ family friendly film screenings every day throughout the summer holidays. Films to be screened will include Aladdin (PG), Toy Story 4 (U), Spider-Man: Far from Home (12A), The Queen’s Corgi (cert tbc) and Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans (cert tbc), The Lion King (cert tbc) and Angry Birds 2 (cert tbc).
Cine Kids are family friendly screenings for families with children of all ages, taking place daily on weekends and holidays. All tickets are £3.50 for Cine Kids Club members. Cine Kids Club Membership is free and available from QUAD Box office.
