Paracinema, QUAD’s home-grown Film Festival, returns this September for four days of cult films, horror, sci-fi and fantasy. Offering an exciting range of films from genres and sub-genres outside the mainstream that don’t usually get the opportunity to play on the big screen, Paracinema returns to QUAD for its fourth edition over the weekend of Friday 22nd to Monday 25th September. The festival will feature over fifteen films including UK and world premieres, plus film events, interviews, panel discussions and performances.
Headline movies for the four-day event include the Japanese cult classic Battle Royale, the World Premiere of the intense British horror movie Incessant and UK premieres of both the Japanese body horror The Sound of Summer and psychedelic noir thriller Psychosis. Haunted Ulster Live serves up a hilarious take on paranormal investigation, while Kim’s Video unearths an incredible story from the heyday of the VHS era. The festival programme also includes 30 short films, presenting some of the best offerings in the genre, in themed showcase screenings.
As part of the programme of film events, Paracinema welcomes director, writer and producer Mick Garris (known for Hocus Pocus and his many Stephen King adaptations) for a live online interview followed by his movie Riding The Bullet (also adapted from a Stephen King novella). Last year’s popular shows with Pop-Up Puppet Cinema will be returning for riotous Video Shop Memories with our expert panel as well as serving up the final challenge of the Paracinema Film Quiz to wrap up the weekend.
With many directors and actors from the Festival’s films attending over the weekend, you can also expect a lively social event for the four days of Paracinema, as well as a range of merchandise and dealers tables over the weekend for attendees to browse.
Adam Marsh, Cinema Programmer at QUAD, said “Alongside the eclectic mix of genre films and non-mainstream titles, we are always happy to welcome the filmmakers to bring their work to Derby audiences. It is really exciting see these emerging talents here at Paracinema and get on board early as their careers bloom.”
Paracinema runs from Friday 22nd September to Monday 25th September, with screenings and events throughout each day. Tickets are priced at: £10 or £7.50 per standard film, with additional prices for special events. A Paracinema Festival Pass allows entry to all talks and events at the festival and costs £45 or £25 concessions.
