QUAD, Derby presents a Programme Of Special Film, TV & Book Events for 2023
QUAD in Derby has a programme of special film, TV and book events planned for 2023.
Big Buffy Meet Up: Return to the Hellmouth (advised for ages 15+) 1st April, 4pm – 10pm
Celebrating all things Buffy, this event includes themed cocktails, games, quizzes, karaoke, activity packs, a fancy-dress competition and even a live magic show! Buffy episodes will be screened on the Big Screen for the perfect way to relive Sunnydale circa 1997 with fellow Buffy fans. Tickets: £27.50 inc booking fee
Dracula or The Undead (suitable for ages 11+) Sunday 16th April from 3pm
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of its first publication, Don’t Go Into The Cellar Theatre Company present an original one-man show adapted from the great Bram Stoker Gothic novel, Dracula. Jonathan Goodwin plays Sir Henry Irving and a host of others. Tickets: £8
Prince Night – Purple Rain Friday 21 April at 7pm
A night celebrating the music of the Prince, includes a screening the Oscar winning Purple Rain (1984) followed by an All-Request Prince DJ Night in QUAD’s Cafe Bar with a specially themed cocktail menu. Tickets: £5 – £10
Whooverville Presents: Novel Experiences – Saturday 13th May from 10am
A celebration of Doctor Who novels looking back to the days of The Virgin New and Missing Adventures, the BBC Eighth Doctor and Past Doctor Adventures 1991-2005, the event features many authors who wrote them, confirmed as attending are: Andrew Hunt, Andrew Lane, Colin Brake, Dale Smith, Daniel Blythe, David McIntee, Gary Russell, Jeremy Hoad, Mags L. Halliday, Mark Morris, Martin Day, Matt Jones, Nick Walters, Nigel Robinson, Paul Cornell, Paul Ebbs, Paul Magrs, Peter Anghelides, Peter Darvill-Evans, Simon Forward, Simon Guerrier, Steve Cole, Steve Lyons. Eurovision Grand Final Live (suitable for all ages) – Saturday 13th May at 7:30pm
For the first time, the 67th Eurovision Song Contest will be broadcast LIVE into cinemas across the UK, allowing fans to join in celebrating the biggest party of the year, hosted by the BBC in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine to a global audience of more than 160 million. There will be a special preview of BBC3 new show I Kissed a Boy presented by Dannii Minogue, before the Grand Final from 8pm. Tickets: £12.50 (including complimentary glass of Prosecco on arrival)
Edge Lit 9 – Saturday 8th July from 10am – 5pm
Edge-Lit returns to QUAD for its 9th edition to celebrate the best in Horror, Thriller, Fantasy and Science-Fiction writing, with panel discussions, workshops, readings and interviews with an array of genre fiction talent from around the UK. There will also be book sales from independent presses and authors. Guests include Jeremy Dyson from The League of Gentlemen, also known for the critically acclaimed play and film Ghost Stories; and Christopher Priest whose novel The Prestige was adapted into a film starring Christian Bale & Hugh Jackman. Tickets: £35
Japan Fest (suitable for all ages) – Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th July from 11am
A celebration of Japanese culture over two days Japan Fest is organised by Otaku World in association with QUAD. Besides performances, film, and anime, activities will include workshops, Japanese arts and crafts plus authentic handmade food and Japanese inspired drinks. An opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture for all ages, adults, children and especially for families. Ticket prices TBC
Whooverville 14 (suitable for all ages) – Saturday 2nd September from 10am – 6pm
Celebrating Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary in 2023, the event includes special guests including the 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy, the 8th Doctor Paul McGann and Sophie Aldred, the 7th Doctor’s Companion. The day comprises Q&A interviews, panel discussions, autograph signings, photo opportunities as well as a wide range of merchandise dealers. Whooverville is the East Midland’s biggest annual get-together for fans of the BBC TV series Doctor Who organised by Derby’s fan group, The Whoovers. Tickets: £55, £38 Concessions & £10 for under 12yrs.
Paracinema Cult Film Festival (suitable for ages 15+) Friday 22nd – Monday 25th September
Unique to QUAD, Paracinema Cult Film Festival weekend is an eclectic mix of films and events blending horror, sci-fi and fantasy genres with Eurospy revivals, ‘80s Giallo and exclusive previews events, special guests, Q&As and a Pop Up Puppet Cinema show. Ticket prices TBC
Tomb Raider Day TR27 (suitable for all ages) – Saturday 14th October from 11am
TR27 is a Tomb Raider Celebration Day, the unofficial, one-day fan event celebrating all things around the Derby-originated Tomb Raider game. 2023 is a big year for Lara Croft with multiple anniversaries across the franchise as Tomb Raider III turns 25. Guests include voice actor Judith Gibbins, who voiced Lara in the game with more guest announcements to follow, TR27 will feature panel discussions, photography and signing sessions. Tickets: £35, £30 Concessions & £10 for under 12yrs.
