Screenings in May and June

QUAD are delighted to announce a season of films by, about and for punks which are screening in May and June.

The QUAD Save The Queen season, has been programmed to accompany the exhibition Jubilee City – Derby Punk In The 1970s, which is currently showing at QUAD as part of FORMAT24.

The films have been selected and programmed by QUAD’s Film & Marketing Officer Peter Munford who says: “Punk was not just a phenomenon on radio, record and in concert halls. It also quickly made the leap to the silver screen. I’m excited to be able to present some classic films which I think represent the spirit of punk in cinema”.

Films screening included in the QUAD Save The Queen season are as follows

Repo Man (18) 1984 USA Dir: Alex Cox

Screening Friday 24 May 8:45pm and & Tuesday 28 May 6:00 pm (with Introduction from Peter Munford).

A sci-fi punk mash-up in which a teenage punk comes up against some of L.A.s finest weirdos when he takes a job as a car repossessor.

We Are The Best! (15) 2013 Sweden Dir: Lukas Moodysson

Screening Saturday 1 June 8:45pm & Wednesday 5 June 6:00pm

In early 80s Stockholm, two 13 year old girls form a band and are not going to let the fact that they have only written one song or adults’ insistence that punk is dead stop them living out their punk dreams.

A punk band books a gig at a remote bar without realising that the bar’s staff and clientele are violent skinheads. When the band witness a backstage crime, they are soon pitted against violent extreme-right criminals.

A fashion model unwittingly becomes a host for aliens which are on the hunt for hard drugs in a gender-bending sci-fi tale set against the backdrop of New York’s early 80s music scene.

Screening Saturday 22 June 8:45pm & Wednesday 26 June 6:00pm (with introduction from cult film historian Darrell Buxton)

Sex Pistols obsessed 15-year-old Cebe (Linda Manz) yearns to escape the backwater town she lives in with her junkie mother. When her father (Dennis Hopper) returns home from jail the family enters a deeply destructive spiral.

Screening Friday 28 June 8:45pm & 2 July 6:00pm

A documentary on Max’s Kansas City, the New York nightclub which birthed the punk movement in the USA, plus a short film detailing Sid Vicious’s final live shows which took place at Max’s in September 1978.

Individual tickets to each film screening are available at QUAD’s normal ticket prices (£10.00 standard, £7.50 concessions, £5.00 for ages 16 – 25.) Each ticket is subject to a £1 transaction fee with the exception of those with a paid QUAD membership.

The exhibition Jubilee City – Derby Punk In The 1970s is curated by and will draw upon the archive of artist Aaron Williamson, whilst also incorporating ephemera and documents arising from a call-out to individuals who were active on Derby’s punk scene between 1976 – 1979. The exhibition is open between 12pm and 6pm each day until 30 June and is free to view.
