Updates from QUAD’s Schools in Residence programme:
At the end of term Horizons 6th Form continued their amazing work with digital participatory artist John Whall, ENGAGE Marsh Award for Excellence in Visual Arts Engagement Winner 2023. Unleashing their creativity, they designed kites and explored what ‘play’ meant to them through PlayDoh. After modelling their playful sculptures, they learnt how to create 3D scans of them. The 3D scans of their artwork were transported into the digital world of John Whall’s PlayLAND and PlayLAB exhibition at QUAD this summer. The students also got to learn game-designing skills with John whilst adventuring within the digital world of PlayLAND before the exhibition.
Teachers and teaching assistants at Horizons 6th Form participated in a digital animation professional development session with artist Helen Jackson. During the session, they explored stop-motion animation techniques, digital drawing, and how to animate their drawings. They will share these skills with their students and use them to document student’s work creatively.
At Pear Tree Community Junior School, Year 5 students continued their collaboration with a lantern-making artist from Surtal Arts, finishing their willow doves that will be a part of the school’s Peace Procession as part of Derby Peace Week in September.
Excitingly, Year 3 students also had creative sessions with John Whall. They made artworks (kites, PlayDoh sculptures and geometric PlayLAB nets) that contributed to both PlayLAND and PlayLAB exhibitions. Can you spot any of their artworks in the exhibition?
We’re thrilled to share more of our creative journey on the Schools in Residence Programme in the upcoming academic year!
