QUAD Autumn 2023 Exhibitions Launch

QUAD presents an Autumn season of exhibitions, workshops, talks and events that invites our audiences to explore their worlds and cultures through their works and experience in different mediums.

Come and celebrate the launch of two FREE exhibitions from 6:30pm on 22 September;

QUAD Gallery: The Scrawny Beauties of Ethni City by Seema Mattu

QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces: From That Day On by Lingfei Ren

QUAD is delighted to bring the work of Seema Mattu to QUAD Gallery. The Scrawny Beauties of Ethni City is Seema Mattu’s first solo exhibition, and a deep dive into SEEMAWORLD – an immersive, multi-channel realm and future streaming facility. With a specific interest in lo-fi high fantasy storytelling, SEEMAWORLD is framed as a theme park, and explores systems of caste, queer sorcery, fan labour and how gender is classified through digital technologies. Through mixed-media animation, IRL (In Real Life) environment-building, audience interactivity, audio installations, visual spectacle and trickster vibes, The Scrawny Beauties of Ethni City embarks on the origins of SEEMAWORLD’s ongoing, unfolding caste-centric narrative, Engodamy. This is a play on the term endogamy, which refers to the custom of marrying within one’s own group. Engodamy is set in the world-built world, Youterus – and, alongside its main inhabitants, places you at the mind and soul of its oldest city: Ethni City.

Also launching on the night is an exhibition by Lingfei Ren: From That Day On in QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces, as part of this year’s FORMAT23 International Photography Festival.

Each of us has a story that starts from “that day.” For Lingfei Ren, From That Day On is a long-term project presenting her memories and experiences that are multi-threaded and interweaved through her work. The images metaphorically and candidly reflect Ren’s responses to family, love, changes in the social environment and world events. Ren discusses the definition of ‘home’ and people’s psychological conditions affected by identity, family, social construction, and urban life. The effect can be individual or collective; they can also be temporary or consecutive.

Free entry but booking required.

FREE refreshments will be provided on the night.

The Scrawny Beauties of Ethni City by Seema Mattu runs from 23 September – 26 November

From That Day On by Lingfei Ren runs from 23 September – 7 January
