25-year-old office worker Sawako (Fukunaga Akari) enjoys obtaining photos of middle-aged men, assembling a scrapbook from her collection. Unable to maintain a good relationship with her father, she has dated only older men, until she grows closer to her co-worker Mori (Kaneko Daichi), who is around her age. As their relationship develops, Sawako’s emotions begin to undergo a gradual transformation.
Commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Nikkatsu Roman Porno, a new type of erotic film established in the 1970s by the Nikkatsu Corporation, Hand represents the first of three films created as part of the ROMAN PORNO NOW project, which aims to promote the diversity, entertainment, and artistry on display in Roman Porno works. Adapting Yamazaki Nao-Cola’s short story, director Matsui Daigo demonstrates these values in a skilful exploration of the psychological trauma borne by one young woman and how she is able to overcome it.
This unique revival of an iconic Japanese erotic film label, set against a backdrop of contemporary Japanese society, can be enjoyed by audiences of all genders thanks to its dramatic love story featuring a young couple.
