Writing courses, Halloween Horror day and The UK Ghost Story Festival this Autumn

Led by tutor and successful self-published author Dawn Brookes, Self-Publishing for Beginners is an eight-week course which will cover key aspects of self-publishing including options and platforms for self-publishing, marketing and reviews, cover design, editing and proofreading, publishing e-books, book formatting, pricing and royalties. Perfect for authors who’ve considered self-publishing but aren’t sure where to start, Self-Publishing for Beginners takes place at QUAD on Mondays commencing 4th October to 22nd November, 6.30pm to 9pm. The cost is £115 or £105 for concessions.

Writing for Children with Lesley Parr is an informal, fun six-week course offering the opportunity to develop your ideas using writing tips and practical activities to get your imagination flowing. The course explores topics such as how to write for your target age range, character development, imaginative planning, editing, children’s publishing today and how to build a community of writers. Suitable for writers of all levels of experience, this course does not cover picture books. Lesley Parr is a teacher and author, and her debut The Valley Of Lost Secrets (Jan 2021) was selected as Waterstones Book of the Month and The Sunday Times Book of the Week. Writing for Children takes place at QUAD on Mondays commencing 11th October to 15th November, 6:30pm to 9:00pm. The cost is £85 or £75 for concessions

Introduction to Creative Writing with QUAD’s Literature Officer Alex Davis, is a short four-week course introducing the key facets of creative writing. The course covers planning, plotting, story structure, description and dialogue as well as exploring flash fiction, short stories, novellas and novels. This course is ideal for anyone looking to get their words down on paper for the first time, or coming back to writing after many years off. Introduction to Creative Writing with Alex Davis takes place on Mondays commencing 11th October to 1st November, from 12:00pm to 1:30pm. The cost is £45 or £40 concessions.

Hallowe’en Horrors is a day of horror writing featuring five workshop sessions with acclaimed authors looking at a range of aspects of the genre, offers inspiration, imagination and information. Workshops are The Five Senses in Horror with Alex Davis, Creating Monsters with Angeline Trevena, Building Atmosphere with Sophie Draper, The Uncanny: Making The Everyday Seem Strange in Fiction with James Everington and Horror in Publishing with Alex Davis. Hallowe’en Horrors takes place on Saturday 30th October, from 10:30am to 6:00pm. Tickets, including a horror goodie bag, are £32.
 
The UK Ghost Story Festival returns to QUAD for its second edition in 2021, with three days of events, panel discussions, workshops, readings and talks focussed on ghost stories, folk horror and supernatural fiction. Participating speakers are Vicky Brewster, Darrell Buxton, Simon Clark, Alex Davis, Don’t Go Into the Cellar Theatre, Stephanie Ellis, Tracy Fahey, Simon Fairbanks, Alyson Faye, Anita Frank, Eli John (Artist), Peter Laws, Caroline Lea, Laura Mauro, Mark Morris, Neil Spring, Rhiannon/Sarah Ward and AJ West.
